Some basic advice before you complete your next holiday car hire contract!

Please read the small print of your car hire agreement, make sure you fully understand what you are receiving for your money; here are some examples.

Insurance

Make sure you are adequately insured for duration of your holiday or business trip. Many hire companies state you have bought comprehensive insurance, but like your insurance at home, does not cover all circumstances. For example in Spain many policies do not cover tryes or the underside of your hire car, you are responsible for any damage. Check for any excess amount set against any claims, is it included or is a further premium required? These issues can still apply to hire companies who advertise that everything is fully inclusive.

Driving License and Insurance Documents

Some countries insist that you always carry your driving license and/or insurance documents. In the case of a hire car, would be the hire documents. Check with the motoring organisations or the hire company itself, to find out the correct requirements for the country you are visiting.

Motoring Accessories

Some countries require you to have specific accessories in your car. These could consist of reflective jackets, red triangle and sometimes a fire extinguisher. It normally does not matter that it is a hire car, you as the driver are responsible for carrying the relevant accessories. Make sure you check up what accessories if any, you are required to keep in the car and then check your car, as you pick it up to ensure you have been provided with the correct equipment.
